Julian Alaphilippe endured a horrific crash at stage 11 of Vuelta a España. The race began on Wednesday, 31st August. With just 64 km to go until the finish line, Julian had to be escorted to the hospital by ambulance.
It is suspected that Julian suffered from a broken collarbone. If it turns out to be true, he will not be able to defend his title at the Wollongong’s World Championship. QuickStep-AlphaVinyl is now left with only five players in the competition. Remco Evenepoel and Julian were riding in the front together when Julian slid out and hurt his shoulder. Julian was a key member of Evenepoel’s support.
Julian has suffered throughout the year 2022. First, he suffered from some illness, then he came down in a massive crash at the Liège-Bastogne-Liège where he broke two ribs, punctured a lung, and also had a broken scapula.
Nevertheless, Julian did come to the Vuelta with big dreams, which will now remain unchased. Before the Vuelta began, he said to the cameras:
If I can get to my best level, back to 100%, for at least one day between here and the end of the season, I’d be very happy, That would be mission accomplished for me.
