What Do You Need To Know About Kid’s BMX Bikes?
Now that we know about the Best BMX Bikes for kids, we need to know about the important aspects that you should be focusing on when going out to purchase one. There are not a lot of things to discuss but even these little factors play a huge part in the overall experience of the BMX Bikes that you will ultimately choose.
How Are Cranks Important?
You might have noticed that all the BMX Bikes are single-speed machines, and in order to complement the performance of these bikes, cranksets play a very vital role. They are crucial for balancing the rider’s weight, and the speed/agility of the bike. When getting a BMX for your kid, make sure that it comes installed with a good-quality crankset.
The best type of crankset to go for is the three-piece crankset, you might have noticed it as we highlighted it in the bikes that came installed with it. A three-piece crankset has separate crank arms, spindle, and even bearing races, this makes sure that the bike’s performance is well-balanced.
Some of you might want to go for a single-piece crankset, which isn’t recommended at all. These types of cranks have a cheap construction and can lead to fatal accidents if used carelessly.
Construction Matters: Steel Or Aluminum
If you are a hardcore BMX Rider yourself then you might know that the superiority lies with Steel BMX Bikes, but that doesn’t mean that Aluminum BMX Bikes are inferior, in fact, some of the best BMX Bikes have aluminum frames now.
Growing up, we knew that Chromoly Steel was the material that worked best for BMX Bikes but technology has progressed far enough since then. Although if you want a BMX that has high impact resistance then you should opt for a bike that has a steel construction. Then again, the more adventurous you will be, the more chances of an accident will be there.
Steel can protect the kids from crash damage as compared to Aluminum, so even if the bike incurs heavy losses, it can be repaired easily without breaking the bank. Aluminum on the other hand will be hard and costly to fix. If you want to get a BMX bike like the old school BMX bikes for your kids then that would work well too.
Should You Opt For More Spokes Or Less?
Most modern BMX Bikes have a 16-inch or 18-inch wheel size, which means powerful wheelsets for young riders, but what about the spoke count on these wheels?
Lighter BMX Bikes will have 20h rims and if you want a really strong BMX then it would have between 32-36h rims. More spokes mean more strength, if the spoke count of a wheel is high then it will remain true for a long amount of time and will be resistant against the big drops if your child loves to do tricks and stunts on the BMX. Even though the stunts are important, we cannot treat BMX bikes like wheelie bikes.
Having more spokes also has a downfall though, it ultimately increases the weight of the bike which leads to lesser acceleration while riding. Our advice would be to opt for lesser spokes if you want a simple experience for the kids but if they want to become a professional and try something extra then get a wheelset with more spokes, you would just have to straighten the wheels weekly though!
