After winning a stage victory at the Giro Giro d’Italia, Biniam Girmay made history. Shortly after the win, Girmay had a freak accident at the podium where he injured his eye. Due to this he had to drop out of the event completely but it seems that he will be making a grand comeback now.
His injuries were fatal as he suffered from a suffered a hemorrhage in the internal chamber of his left eye. Having recovered from that now, he will be participating in his national championships this coming weekend. We are more than excited to see Girmay back in action.
He definitely has a busy schedule ahead of him as he will be competing in both the time trial (June 24) and Road Race (June 26). Even after all of this, he will not be making his Tour de France debut this year, instead he will take part in the World Championships in Australia.
After his fatal accident, the medial team took his care properly and they gave the verdict that he just escaped permanent eye damage. Even with that verdict, he had to stay three weeks off the bike and he did that. Although the national championships will be something else entirely, Biniam is more than ready for it.
Biniam Girmay had this to say after he left the Giro:
Thank you to everyone who supported me and pushed me. I’m OK now. See you soon.
I was a bit sad about what happened with the champagne but when I came back to the hotel they were super happy. They were a bit afraid, but when it looked ok, I really enjoyed it, I’m happy.
Biniam Girmay will be returning to Europe in July after the national championships. In his schedule, there will be Tour de Pologne which he is looking forward to. We won’t have to wait long to seem him back at it!
