Garuda sport equipment policy
I just spoke with the Garuda Airlines office in Bangkok and they assured me that their worldwide policy for sporting equipment (bikes, surfboards, diving equipment,..) is an extra 20 kg allowance on top of the normal luggage allowance.
I'm flying with them from Bkk to Bali and later on to Australia: I'll let you know if any problems arise...

No box required. Just wrap your bicycle tubes with carton, deflate the tyres to 80% and you are fine. Good experience

Bicycle goes for free in addition to your checked luggage, as long as it less than 30kg & 177x 23x102cm.
They kindly accepted my bike packed in a cardboard bike box, which i got from a bicycle shop.
