It might have taken some time but Julian Alaphilippe has finally claimed an amazing win in 2022, that too in his 2021 Rainbow Jersey. When the time finally came for Itzulia Basque Country, he stormed for the stage 2 victory and that was a true spectacle.
His performance was amazing, he swept the floor and shocked everyone with his moves. When the dust settled down, he had left behind Fabien Doubey (TotalEnergies) and Quinten Hermans (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) to take the first place.
This was a team effort and Julian could not have claimed this victory if it wasn’t for Remco Evenepoel. The lengthy leadout by Evenepoel and positioning allowed Alaphilippe to claim the first position.
This is Julian Alaphilippe’s fourth Itzulia stage win, thanks to the wonderful collaboration with Evenepoel. After the race had ended, both Julian and Remco threw out their arms in celebration.
This win is a morale booster for the Belgian team after Evenepoel landed the second position at the opening time trial. After the race, Julian said:
Remco did a great job setting me up, thanks to his work I had the perfect leadout.
Stage 3 of the event is approaching fast and both Julian and Remco have their own set of goals to fulfill. Who will bag the most wins from both of them? We won’t have to wait long to find out!
