On this page we attempt to make available the experience of individual bicycle tourists who travel to Madagascar (you can share your experiences here).
Antananarivo, Madagascar airport
Arrival: Bicycles are delivered through the 'large baggage window'next to the (only) conveyor belt. Similar to all other non-developped countries, taxi drivers are standing in line to pick you up. Nevertheless, its very easy cycling from the airport to Antananarivo center. Slightly uphill, but easy to manage, approx 1.5 hours. If you would like to take the taxi from the airport, don't get hasseled by the 'official' taxi airport drivers. Cycle/walk out of the airport for 1km and take a normal taxi there.
Departure: Take your time, don't get there only 2 hours before your flight departs (even if its 9:00). The amount of handling desks (and 1x 747 airplane) causes a long queue. Than take your receipt to the Cassier (right hand side) and pay the fee. Payment by CC is possible. Return to te handeling desk and get your passport and tickets for your bicycle. Deliver your bicycle to the large luggage handeling next to the cassier. (~30-60min).
Money changing is possible at 1 counter, make sure that you exchange as your money is worthless outside of Madagascar. it might accure that they just start counting money, which can take up to 30 min..., head for customs (500persons 3 desks) and security. As the customs already filters the presure the only security X-ray machine is not a bottle neck.
Don't worry the plane will wait for those who think the whole handling takes only 1 hour...
