Specialized Epic Review
Specialized is known for being epic, and this series is likely meant to embody that. We certainly concur. We tried some of the top and bottom of the line models to see if they would really live up to their name, and boy, did they!
These bikes had the perfect amount of travel for a cross country bike, accelerated furiously, and had just the right amount of stiffness and agility. The 26 inch wheelset had slightly less traction than we would have liked though. Even at the entry level, the SRAM componentry packs a punch.
At the top of the line, the S-Works Epic 29 was truly a dream to ride. This bike has Shimano XTR groupset, the best Shimanos you can get before you venture into electronic shifters. This bike felt lighter than air to ride, and it picks up speed scary fast. Only occasionally sluggish on the tighter trails, this bike was just buttery smooth.
+Pros:
- Beautiful geometry and design
- Stiff and agile
- Excellent componentry across the board
- Some of the smoothest rides we’ve had
- Ideal for cross country riding
- Epic!
-Cons:
- Wheelset slightly sluggish on tight trails
- Lower models lacked traction
- Some models a little expensive
The Verdict
High quality components, great design, and unbelievable performance across the board.
The Specialized Epic bikes were amazing to review. These bikes have it all – the aesthetics, the componentry, and the performance. A triple threat in our books. You’ll have to shell out a pretty penny, but you will get what you pay for.
