“Victim of a fall during the 4th stage, Pierre Latour suffered multiple burns on his body,”

Latour Itzula Basque Country

Pierre Latour (Team TotalEnergies) started stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country with big ambitions even though he was at the overall ninth position. The stage was sprawling with a total distance of 185.6 kilometers from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Zamudio. A high-speed crash on the descent of a hill killed all the ambitions of the French Rider.

The crash made Latour fall back behind the leading group. This group was filled with Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), Ruben Guerreiro (EF Education-EasyPost), and Davide Formolo (UAE Team Emirates), while in the lead there was Victor Lafay (Cofidis).

In the last 11 kilometers to go, Latour made his way to a straight road, where the pain from the crash was easily depicted on his face. There was no other choice now, he had to drop out of the event. He finished stage 4 in 107th place. He was also nine minutes behind the eventual winner Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers).

Team TotalEnergies made the following post on Twitter:

This grizzly crash crushed the hopes and dreams of Latour and Team TotalEnergies. The team stated:

Victim of a fall during the 4th stage, Pierre Latour suffered multiple burns on his body. He will not be at the start tomorrow morning. Get well Pierro.

Team TotalEnergies had big plans, they were laying out attacks in the race, trying to push Latour to the overall lead. There was not that much gap between Latour and Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) when the race started. When a steep climb came, Latour maintained his momentum and came in front of Roglič.

Apart from the crash, this has been a very good year for Latour, especially since he made the shift from AG2R La Mondiale to Team TotalEnergies. Things seem good for the French Rider, he just needs to recover and get back in form.
