I got my hands on the Rad Power bikes RadRover 6 Plus for more than two weeks and my first impression was that it is a somewhat unique electric bike. It is a Class 2 fat tire e-bike. It looked like the kind of bike that could even bring a mighty mountain bike to shame! Sounds crazy right?

It has plenty of features along with benefits to offer. You can easily use this powerful machine for unpaved and paved commutes. With the kind of power this bike is packing, it will easily thrive in a town and even on hills if you want to.  It brings back the old classic Rover roots mixed with something new and unique.

The Frame and Construction

A strong and durable construction will go a very long way. You may be discouraged by the overall weight of the bike but wait, there is more to it. The bike is constructed with a 6061 aluminum frame which offers a payload capacity of the Rad Rover 6, which is 275 lb.  I recommend not exceeding the said limit for long rides. If you want to squeeze in a few miles over a short distance, that should be fine.

The Rad Rover is built for every environment, especially for harsh territories. I tested the bike’s performance in the snow and was impressed. Everything from the component layout to the performance delivery is up to the mark. It makes good use of its fat tires and suspension. When combined, the bike is more than capable of pushing back huge layers of snow. In any riding situation, stability is a must-have. For this, the bike has an  RST spring fork mounted on the front. It makes riding in the snow favorable! The suspension fork nulls the bumps and shocks.

The bike performs well on flat surfaces too.  The lightweight structure of the bike extends the whole riding experience. The Battery

Coming to the battery, The 750W geared hub motor is powered by a 672Wh Lithium Rad battery. The battery is the most positive rated feature of  Rad Rover 6 Plus. On a full charge, the user will be able to enjoy a range of over 45 miles. However, we want you to not get fixated by these numbers as they will change depending on how you use this e-bike.

If you conserve the battery and use your own pedaling power in combination, you can get greater mileage. Harsher and tougher environments, especially the load capacity will drain the range distance. We have to talk about the Samsung 35E cells.  These cells are known for doing a terrific job of providing power to the battery. They are lightweight with good power.

The Rad Rover 6 Plus takes almost 6 hours to fully charge. If you ask me that’s a long time. Therefore, I advise you to pre-plan all of your adventures. But the good part is that the battery life totally depends on the rider, especially their riding style.

Breaking Down The Braking Structure 

The Rad Rover 6 Plus comes installed with Nutt Hydraulic Disc Brakes which are paired with 180mm front and rear rotors. This is a significant upgrade over the previous generation of RadRover bikes. These are highly optimized brakes that perform just fine in testing. The hydraulic disc brakes are responsive.

Even when riding at a speed of more than 20 mph, it took me approximately 15 feet to stop on average which is good. The Nutt Hydraulic brakes also excel in stability, especially on sharp stops. However, the braking distance is affected by the rider’s skills and weight.

Rims and Tires

 I have to say, the Kenda Juggernaut 26” x 4.0” pairs really well with the Rad Rover 6 Plus. The tires are capable because they can hold weight while handling a variety of terrain. The knobs and blocks provide good traction and stability.

These tires can hold up a lot of air, which comes in extremely handy for a couple of scenarios. With high pressure, you can roll quickly on paved surfaces. On low pressure, there is increased traction on looser terrain. Many users have reported that they don’t even have to deal with punctured tires, especially if the tires have low pressure.

Analyzing The Engine

The main power of an electric bike is in its engine and battery. Rad Rover 6 Plus features a  750W geared hub motor providing a maximum speed of 20Mph. However, there are a few points that I want to highlight for you. As soon as you reach the maximum speed, the motor assist automatically shuts off. This feature helps explore the potential of this bike. 

The Rad Rover 6 Plus Motor provides 80Nm of torque. The motor is powerful enough to tackle each and every kind of terrain. But if you exceed the 275 lb weight capacity limit, it might become difficult to handle long and steep climbs.

Summing Up The LCD Display System 

Most bikes have a basic kind of LCD Display system with minimalistic information but the Rad Rover 6 Plus backlit LCD display shows a variety of information. The speedometer displays how fast you are going. This is helpful in managing the speed according to the remaining battery. The built-in clock shows the time.

One LCD feature that must be talked about is the Odometer. If you are traveling from point A to point B, the odometer will be able to tell how much distance is between these two points.  The LCD display system also shows the pedal assist level. A higher pedal assist level means more boost provided by the engine, increasing the adrenaline. (In order to uphold laws, I suggest that you keep the pedal assist to level one or two).

Comfort And Accessibility Evaluation 

The Rad Rover 6 is adjustable for short-heighted riders. The bike’s top tube can be lowered to 30.5”. Coming to comfort, technically there are no in-built flaws with the Rad Rover 6 Plus. It has a 47.8” wheelbase which supports the comfortability level.  Here’s the good part: I noticed the ergonomic leather imitation grips on the handlebars. This is a small feature but it does enhance the rider’s grip. The leather sticks firmly secure the ride, isn’t that wonderful? 

These small but meaningful features make the whole experience that Rad Power Bikes is known for! Not lying but I was concerned about the comfort of the saddle. It looked stiff. But the saddle is rightly comfortable you find the sweet spot between the saddle width and height.

The Verdict 

Considering the pros and cons along with my testing evaluation, I would rate this bike an 8 out of 10. It does have several features to look forward to but the bike certainly has its limitations. The construction of this bike makes it versatile, and that is what makes it different from the rest of the bunch.

Let’s take the example of the 700mm wide, 4-inch high-rise handlebars. This kind of width of the handlebars promotes overall stability and control. The paint job of the Rad Rover 6 Plus is also unique, and with the backing of the highly impressive performance, you really can’t ignore the prowess of this bike.
