After delivering a poor performance through the opening stages at Vuelta a España, Richard Carapaz has finally picked up his game with a stage 12 win. The INEOS Grenadiers rider was lying in the 24th overall position at the tour.
He showed his strength at the climb on Andalucía. He created a difference between him and the breakaway which had formed. With just 2 km to go, Carapaz launched into a sprint that was unmatched by everyone.
Bora-Hansgrohe’s rider Wilco Kelderman finished in second place. Despite suffering from a crash, the race leader Evenepoel still holds the red jersey. Evenpoel was followed Enric Mas (Movistar). While the Jumbo-Visma top rider Primož Roglič only managed to finish in 17th place.
Carlos Rodríguez lost 11 seconds due to briefly losing contact with his team, but he managed to secure his position.
