Zipp 202 Review

The calling card of the Zipp 202 is its weigh which is difficult to ignore considering that some of the wheelsets venture only slightly beyond 1400g. However, cyclists cannot rely upon weight alone so I decided to see just what the 202 had to offer.

As you can imagine, there are several advantages to having wheels that are this light. To start off with, I found that acceleration was an absolute breeze, especially from a stop. I was also impressed by the speed that this carbon wheelset had to offer. While it may not be the fastest out there, I did feel that it was an extremely close race.

Since this wheelset is so light, it was just begging me to hit the slopes and so I did. The lack of weight and the stiffness made getting up even the steepest slopes incredibly fun. It still offered up a decent amount of stability as I headed downhill as well which was a plus.

There is no getting around the fact that these are incredibly expensive wheels. The good news, however, is that if you decide to spend this money, the wheelset will certainly announce it to the world. The sleek design and overall quality simply shouts expensive. For this price tag, you do need to consider some of the pitfalls as well. While the braking of the 202 is decent, it tends to fail a little when it comes to wet weather, with a much less impressive performance. Therefore, you will need to decide if it is worth your money.

+Pros:

  • Great climbing ability
  • Super light
  • Stiff
  • Looks good
  • Fast

-Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Mediocre braking in wet conditions

The Verdict

If you have the money to burn, then the Zipp 202 is a good wheelset for climbing.

While there are a few problem areas here and there, the 202 does come through on most occasions.
