Zipp 454 Review

Zipp 454 is the wheelset with the highly sought-after Sawtooth profile. This profile simultaneously lowers drag and side force. Along with Sawtooth, Zipp 454 wheels incorporate a whole host of difficult to pronounce techniques intended to make you go faster. There are plenty of aero wheel brands that help you speed in a straight line with minimal drag. What’s unique about the Zipp 454 wheels is that they can also help you have more control in the crosswind, which most cyclists know is tricky. Zipp 454’s latest editions, like NSW, is quite adept at this.

Zipp 454 design is inspired by natural shapes that gather speed in the wild. The overall design is made to be highly efficient, meaning these wheels have less aero drag or buffeting than most brands. Thanks to the Sawtooth shape and ideal weight distribution, you won’t find yourself correcting course on crosswind, as you would with a standard set of wheels. The jagged Sawtooth design is inspired by whales to tackle windy conditions. The NSW even has fin-shaped nodes inside the rim mimicking whale technique swimming against the tide. The latest Zipp 454 also have sets of hexagonal dimples on the rim side. They increase the vortex shedding frequency, which prevents buffeting in the crosswind.

Zipp says it works on each one of these wheelsets for over 200 hours at the factory. It may actually be true considering the effectiveness of the final result. This amount of work does not come cheap, so you will have to be willing to spend a bit of money to get your hands on a superb Zipp aero bike. For example, the latest Zipp 454 NSW costs $4,000.

+Pros:

  • Coveted Sawtooth profile design
  • Great for speeding
  • Minimal drag
  • More control in crosswind

-Cons:

  • Very expensive

The Verdict

Zipp 454 is a highly sought-after set of wheels by speeders. These wheels sport the claimed Sawtooth profile design.

If you are willing to spend some money on a wheelset, this should be one of your top choices.

Zipp 454 NSW Carbon Clincher Road WheelsetThis Zipp 454 wheelset is an evolution in the world of competitive road wheels. Sporting a rim design that has been loaded with the latest in Zipp’s racing technological advances, the added aerodynamic finesse and drag reduction leads to exceptional rider stability and a more efficient power transfer to the road. Wind-tunnel tested, these wheels are built to handle strong crosswinds with ease, transferring more power output from the rider to the road than any other wheelset on the market.Exceptional Ratchet EfficiencyAt the heart of these 454 NSW wheels is Zipp’s Cognition hubset which comfortably rides the cutting edge in hub design. Whereas a conventional hub effectively functions as a drum brake once the rider stops pedalling and begins to coast, the Cognition hubs disengage the ratchets via powerful internal magnets, effectively putting the bike in neutral gear. The moment you rotate the pedals forward, the ratchet re-engages and applies your power instantly.Features: Material: Rim: Carbon; Hub: Alloy Rim Model: X454NSW Rim Depth: 53/58mm Rim Inner Width: 17mm Rim External Width: 26.4mm Rim Surface: ABLC HexFin Technology Spokes: Sapim CX-Ray Spoke Count: 24 Spoke Lacing: 2-cross Max Tyre Pressure: 125 psi Hub: Cognition Speed: 11-Speed Weight: 835gTechnology: Cognition: The ultimate in Zipp hub technology. Every time a conventional hub set starts to coast, friction within the freehub ratchet mechanism works like a drum brake to slow the rider down. The drag between hub shell and driver body during coasting is considered an efficiency loss, especially for road wheels. High drag also can significantly contribute to chain-dropping issues. The drag torque drives the cassette clockwise so the chain gets loose on the load side. The solution? The rear Cognition hub with AxialClutch technology reduces drag by disengaging the ratchet mechanism when coasting. It then uses magnets to re-engage once the rider starts pedalling. Showstopper: Showstopper is a complimenting pairing of a directional, moulded-in, texture with silicon carbide particles suspended in the surface resin. The current media blast process applied to all Zipp rims increases the surface roughness of the brake track providing the rider with consistent and responsive braking. In order to improve this for the wettest of rides, Zipp has introduced a moulded-in groove specifically tuned for the Zipp Tangente Platinum Pro EVO Brake Pad. The grooves have been optimized to interact with the leading edge (relative to the rotation of the wheel) of the brake pad and the four cooling channels. The leading edge of the pad and first two channels efficiently wipe water and debris outward, cleaning and drying the braking surface, while the second two cooling channels have maximum interference with the grooves allowing greater braking force than a smooth rim. The cleaning effects of the groove and pad interaction improve brake feel and consistency even in dry conditions. ImPress: Zipp’s ImPress graphics technology prints graphics directly on the wheel, which allows the dimples to do what they were designed to achieve, to control vortex shedding and the rate at which air sheds off the wheel. Managing this is crucial to stability. ImPress graphics also give NSW a distinctive stealthy look. Hexfin Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control (ABLC): The Sawtooth dimple design consists of 12 nodes that are specifically clocked to start aerodynamic shearing at a rate of 50hz at a rider speed of 20mph. Sawtooth accomplishes this by inducing small sheet vortices that shed at a low magnitude, but at a higher natural frequency, thus decreasing the laminar bubble effect on the aerodynamically shielded side of the rim’s profile to further reduce high yaw drag and improve crosswind stability.Buy Zipp Wheels & Tyres from Chain Reaction Cycles, the World’s Largest Online Bike Store.
