On Thursday, 30th June, Giro d’Italia Donne was affected by high winds that blew from Cagliari. The weather forecast predicted that the winds would keep picking up and get higher as the day proceeded. Kristen Faulkner (Team BikeExchange-Jayco), who just recovered from the crash, won the race with the winning time, i.e. 5:45.
Georgia Baker of Team BikeExchange-Jayco held the record previously on the 4.7 km track. Annemiek van Vleuten of Movistar, Elisa Longo Borghini and Elisa Balsamo of team Trek-Segafredo, Riejanne Markus who won the Dutch National Championship, Lucinda Brand and Leah Thomas, were all among the first 100 riders. All of them fell in the top ten.
Even though strong winds brushed the face of the riders and pushed them with all force, all participants fought back and crossed the finished lines as the trees and branches danced to the tunes of the wind.
On the Brighter Side, every contestant crossed the finished line safely without enduring any damage. They did not lose time or directions. The competition is still, gliding into Friday. The stage will be 106.5 km long, starting at Villasimius and leading to Tortolì.
