On a Monday morning, Tiesj Benoot of team Jumbo-Visma was training in Livigno (Italy) when he met a tragic crash. He was reportedly training alone on 7th August when the incident happened, leaving him with some fractured bones.
It is not clear what sparked the accident. It is speculated that he crashed on a drop but no one knows if there was any involvement of a motor vehicle or not. The news report stated that:
He sustained multiple fractures in the accident, but no vital organs were hit and Benoot is not in a life-threatening condition
The report continued to add:
The exact nature of his injuries was not communicated
Although we hoped that it was not the case, another media source stated that he has suffered from fractures in the vertebrae at the neck. The 28-year-old has a remarkable cycling record. In 2020, he won the Paris-Nice. Going a little back, in 2018 he took victory at the Strade Bianche. He switched teams from Team DSM to Team Jumbo-Visma this year.
Jumbo-Visma is the true admirer of his talent. They are well aware that Benoot can ride both ways, as a support rider and as well as a leader. Hence, they renewed his contract all the way up till 2025 so that both of them can benefit from each other. Benoot was taking a rest and training in Italy for the upcoming second part of the season when he met the accident.
It was speculated that Benoot will provide support to Van Aert at the upcoming Road World Championships in Australia, since he had such a great tour at Tour de France, taking podium wins and supporting Van Aert, as well as Vingegaard. Benoot had to ride for the Belgium team instead of Jumbo-Visma but it does not look like he will be able to do so anymore.
Given the accounts of the injuries, It is highly unlikely that Benoot will ride again this season.
